Top 10 Books on How to Trust Someone Again

Do you have trust issues?
Do you have trouble trusting others?
Do you wonder how you will ever trust again, or how to rebuild trust with your spouse after an affair, or even how to trust your friends after betrayal?

These are great questions and so important to address. Many of us find ourselves in a position where we have been betrayed and instead of processing the information in a healthy manner we push the feelings aside and move on.

This type of survival is good for a while but will again resurface into other places in your life. Trust per
Merriam Webster states that it is: "a belief that someone or something is reliable, good, honest, effective, etc."

BOOK #1

Deep and Lasting Relationships:
"You’re probably familiar with the old saying, once bitten, twice shy. It describes a painful uncertainty many of us feel every day as we try to engage with other people. Acts of betrayal from our pasts can lead us into long cycles of wariness and mistrust. An inability to trust wisely can lead us to loneliness and isolation, or worse—putting our trust in the wrong people too easily.

The good news is that the ability to trust is both a choice and a skill that you can develop. You do not have to be controlled by the past. To a child, trust is a feeling that comes and goes, always under the influence of other people. Only as an adult can you learn how and when to trust more wisely. This book is a warm and friendly guide to achieving greater self-confidence and deeper levels of intimacy and trust.

Helped along by the book’s exercises and ideas for self-reflection, you’ll begin to develop new patterns of trust. Start by getting comfortable trusting your own instincts. Then, experiment with developing relationships based on mutual trust and curiosity. Learn from and then let go of old betrayals that have impaired your trust-building skills, and approach the rest of your life with a renewed sense of purpose and belonging."

Pete Walker is a licensed Marriage and Family psychotherapist with degrees in Social Work and Counseling Psychology. His therapeutic approach is eclectic and Relational [Intersubjective]. He guides the therapeutic process with values that include empathy, vulnerability, authenticity and mutuality.

Pete’s first book The Tao of Fully Feeling: Harvesting Forgiveness Out Of Blame, is also available through Amazon, has been acclaimed by many therapists, recovery websites, and clients as a powerful, compassionate, and pragmatic tool for guiding recovery.

BOOK #2

DESCRIPTION:
How to let love into our lives, and how to express that love to the world at large--the latest from a best-selling author, David Richo.

We were made to love and be loved. Loving ourselves and others is in our genetic code. It’s nothing other than the purpose of our lives—but knowing that doesn’t make it easy to do. We may find it a challenge to love ourselves. We may have a hard time letting love in from others. We’re often afraid of getting hurt. It is also sometimes scary for us to share the love with those around us—and love that isn't shared leaves us feeling flat and unfulfilled.

BOOK #3

DESCRIPTION:
A few days after an ordinary Valentine's Day, Cindy Beall's life changed forever. She listened with disbelief to her husband, Chris, a respected pastor, confess to pornography addiction, numerous affairs, and the startling news that a woman was pregnant with his child.

With raw honesty and intimate knowledge of pain and of God's power to resurrect something new out of the debris of betrayal,
Cindy reveals how to...

BOOK #4

DESCRIPTION:
A patient-oriented manual for complex trauma survivors.
This training manual for patients who have a trauma-related dissociative disorder includes short educational pieces, homework sheets, and exercises that address ways in which dissociation interferes with essential emotional and life skills, and support inner communication and collaboration with dissociative parts of the personality.

Topics include understanding dissociation and PTSD, using inner reflection, emotion regulation, coping with dissociative problems related to triggers and traumatic memories, resolving sleep problems related to dissociation, coping with relational difficulties, and help with many other difficulties with daily life. The manual can be used in individual therapy or structured groups.

BOOK #5

By Ed Delph
DESCRIPTION:
How thick is the wall you've built around your heart?

Maybe your wall is only one-brick thick because of a hurt you experienced as a teenager. Or maybe your wall is concrete-slab thick because of the pain of a divorce or broken promise. Either way, you have decided not to trust-even God.

This book speaks to the heart of your relationships and provides the tools to demolish the wall. Deep down you know that the wall you've built also keeps out the One who can restore you.

BOOK #6

DESCRIPTION:
Life Is Really Very Simple. What We Give Out, We Get Back

What we think about ourselves becomes the truth for us. I believe that everyone, myself included, is responsible for everything in our lives, the best and the worst.

Every thought we think is creating our future. Each one of us creates our experiences by our thoughts and our feelings. The thoughts we think and the words we speak create our experiences.

BOOK #7

DESCRIPTION:

For many years, Dr. Wayne W. Dyer’s fans have wondered when he would write a memoir. Well, after four decades as a teacher of self-empowerment and the best-selling author of more than 40 books, Wayne has finally done just that!

However, he has written it in a way that only he can—with a remarkable take-home message for his longtime followers and new readers alike—and the result is an exciting new twist on the old format. Rather than a plain old memoir, Wayne has gathered together quantum-moment recollections.

BOOK #8

DESCRIPTION:
In this insightful book, celebrated research psychologist and couples counselor John Gottman plumbs the mysteries of love and shares the results of his famous “Love Lab”: Where does love come from?

Why does some love last, and why does some fade? And how can we keep it alive? Based on laboratory findings, this book shows readers how to identify signs, behaviors, and attitudes that indicate a fraying relationship and provides strategies for repairing what may seem lost or broken.

BOOK #9

DESCRIPTION:
“Dr. Spring possesses a remarkable combination of clarity, wisdom, spirit, and heart. This is an extremely helpful and healing book—a gift to us all.”
—Harriet Lerner, Ph.D., author of The Dance of Anger

“It is ‘must’ reading for any couple who has experienced the violation of trust as a result of an affair.”
Harville Hendrix, Ph.D.

A staggering number of couples in America—about 70 percent—have been affected by extramarital affairs. After the Affair is the only book to offer proven strategies for surviving the crisis and rebuilding the relationship. Written by Janis Abrahms Spring, Ph.D., a nationally known therapist and acknowledged expert on infidelity, this revised and updated version brings the groundbreaking classic into the 21st century, with a new section dealing with online affairs in cyberspace.

For women who are struggling in their marriage—and for clinicians, psychology academics, and readers fascinated by popular psychology—this newly revised and updated edition of After the Affair is essential reading.

DESCRIPTION:
Nobody’s perfect . . . but anyone can apologize. Maybe you can’t make things right, but you can make them better—and even hope for forgiveness. Whether you’ve been thoughtless, dishonest, hurtful, or just plain stupid, a good apology can transform a clumsy moment into an opportunity for a new beginning. But delivering a successful apology isn’t always easy.

Don’t know what to say, how you have offended, or how to make up for it? Art of the Apology: How, When, and Why to Give and Accept Apologies is a guide to every aspect of the well-executed apology—and a cautionary tale for those who hesitate to say “I’m sorry.” Author and attorney Lauren M. Bloom examine the value and the power of “eating crow”: how it can contain a crisis, save a relationship, preserve your integrity, even prevent a lawsuit. You can regain the trust of those around you, but first, you must accept the consequences of your misdeeds and step up to make amends.
